Ordering a custom slate
is fairly easy. Generally,
customers call, or come
to my door and hand
 me a few photos.  We
discuss the size they'd
    prefer, type of back
round and any specific
       items  to be included
on the finished slate.

Slates take 3-4 weeks to
be painted and
shipped, so please
order well ahead of time.
Christmas orders are
taken from October 31st
December  the 5th. Get
in before the rush!!

Horses are my favorite,
but I can paint anything
as long as there is a
picture to look at.

Featured here are samples of horse portraits
on slates. The slates vary in size- some are
whole slates, like the Halfinger Pony.

Whole slates are 16"x24" approximately. I have
a limited number of whole slates left. Whole
slates sell for $325.00.  Due to the size, I mount
the whole slate onto a backboard to keep the
strain off the slate grain. Shipping requires a bit
more packing. Honestly, I do not recommend a
whole slate unless you are able to get it from
 me personally!

Half slates run half the size of the whole- they
can be vertical or horizontal. I use vertical half
slates for signs like "Determined Star".
Half slates go for $225.00

Quarter slates are about 9"x 11" . For shipping
purposes, they are most durable and not nearly
as heavy as the halves and wholes.
Quarter slates sell for $125.00

Often  slates have chipped edges- so if
imperfections bother you,  slate is not your bag!
Slate is so beautiful- each piece handcut in the
1800's- sometimes you can see slice  marks
from the cutter who had scored it.  Time fuses
together when you find evidence of the
   long-gone  craftsman.

  very clear and detailed photo.
Above is a quarter slate, measuring
about 9" x 11".  At the time of the
photo, the slate was not finished.

Enjoy some sample slates!
Here you will see whole slates, half slates, quarters
and chips. All of these have
been sold to customers.

Above is a painted slate "chip" of  a polo pony.
This particular slate was sold and shipped to
Delaware.  A very detailed piece like this is
considered a miniature painting and sells for
  $45.00
"Halflinger Pony" is the original show piece that began my "porch" business in
Churchville, Maryland.   This slate has travelled to a few shows, including the
2004 Horse Expo in Timonium,MD., and the National Therapeutic Riding
Conference in Hunt Valley, 2004.                   "Halflinger Pony" is a whole slate.
Whole slate  of a horse head.
Above- a bookmark-sized piece of slate ordered by a big fan of
Smarty Jones.  Notice the likeness captured, despite the difficult
image from which to work from. Please be aware that newspaper
photos and digital pix do not show colors accurately.
"Determined Star" is a vertical half-slate sign.  After painting,
holes were drilled and the varnished horseshoes were mounted.
Extra mounting holes were drilled for support.  This particular
slate is now a resident of Florida.
